Thank you for visiting my profile!

I grew up in New York City in the 60s and 70s, which explains my fascination with NYC (and Brooklyn) history, and with retro/vintage stuff   I also love weird Victorian novels - sensational yellowbacks, Gothics, mysteries, that kind of thing (but also I love writers like Trollope, who's none of those) - and the oddities in Victorian everyday life, as deciphered through advertising. I love love love old ads - not only for the graphics but for the amazing historical tidbits you can learn from them.

Other things I like to write about are world cuisines and cooking, alternative medicine, weird news (old and new), retro advertising, antiques and collectibles and word/slang history.

Want more weird/retro/funny stuff? There's plenty more on my blogs:

Kitchen Retro (the retro house/home blog, with plenty of sinister 1950s Jell-O molds and very light verse)

The Doubletake (history's oddities, and old slang, and many bizarre ads from old magazines)

The Virtual Dime Museum (adventures in old New York and Brooklyn, historic true crime, and some genealogical stuff too - my ancestors got in the 19th century Brooklyn newspapers a fair bit)
